The Evolution of John Dale Motors

The Evolution of John Dale Motors

From much-loved traditional mechanics to highly regarded, highly skilled automotive technicians.

John Dale Motors is a highly regarded automotive service and repair centre located in Charmhaven, on the Central Coast of New South Wales.

Walking around their busy, vibrant workshop, brimming with the very latest high-tech scanners, laptops and diagnostic equipment, it’s easy to see why John Dale Motors is the first choice for motorists who trust only the highest skilled technicians to look after their modern vehicles, equipped with the very latest electronic components and systems.

For motorists who appreciate that today’s vehicle technology is light years away from where it was even five years ago, it’s easy to forget that a truly exceptional automotive service centre is more than just the impressive high-tech equipment and the passion of the highly skilled automotive technicians who are using it.

The invisible key ingredient is the history and culture of the business itself. The experiences and lessons learned and shared by its people over many decades. Experiences that turn a business entity with an ABN into a living, breathing partner in the community, where generations of customers can rest assured that in Charmhaven there’s an automotive repair business that doesn’t just care about customers’ cars, it cares about the customers themselves, and always has.

So, what is the history of John Dale Motors?

John Dale Motors was established in the 1950’s by, you guessed it, John Dale.

John was born in Mendooran, one of six children born to Jack and Jessica. John attended High School in Mudgee, leaving in 1952.

In 1953, he commenced his Mechanical Apprenticeship at a local car service workshop and, after qualifying, stayed there until 1959. That same year, his parents bought a BP Service Station in Toukley. Armed with a perfect letter of recommendation from his employer, John and the rest of the family upped sticks for Toukley and ran the service station with his Dad until 1967, when John finally went out on his own.

To launch his own venture, John bought a corner block on Main Road, Gorokan where Smith and Adams builders created a workshop to John’s exacting specifications.

John stayed at the Gorokan workshop until the early 1980’s, when he had a brand-new workshop built at 201 Arizona Road, Charmhaven and the phrase “John Dale Motors, Charmhaven” was born. He stayed at this location until 1989, when he sold it to a plumbing business.

The next chapter in the history of John Dale Motors opened with a new workshop being built on 25 acres of land further down the road at number 791 Arizona Road, where John enjoyed another thirteen successful years serving the local community from 1990 to 2003, when he decided to retire.

He sold the business to Adam and Megan Walters (Adam already worked in the business) and began a well-earned retirement on his property at Dyer’s Crossing near Nabiac.

It’s a testament to Adam and Megan’s belief in the business that they sold their house to purchase John Dale Motors and lived at the workshop premises for three and a half years.

Adam and Megan immediately set about equipping the business to service and maintain the next generation of vehicles starting to appear on Australian roads. These new vehicles required a huge investment in cutting-edge diagnostic equipment to read and maintain the multiple sensors, electronic components and engine management computers that constantly monitor and control every aspect of a modern vehicle.

It used to be said that a traditional mechanic just needed a toolbox and a mechanical qualification. If that used to be true, today’s automotive technicians would also benefit from degrees in electronic engineering and computer science!

As well as investing in state-of-the-art equipment, Adam and Megan have invested heavily in their people, building a team of experienced and highly qualified automotive specialists who can handle anything that comes through the door, including logbook servicing, pre-purchase inspections, rego checks, air conditioning servicing and repairs, ABS brake repairs, cooling system repairs, batteries, auto electrics, steering, suspension and tyres.

Today, John Dale Motors offers the levels of customer experience previously only available to motorists paying dealership service prices. The reception area is comfortable and welcoming and two dedicated service advisors keep customers fully informed on the progress of their vehicle throughout the day.

Transparency and trust is in the DNA of John Dale Motors – service videos showing which areas of the vehicle are in good condition and which areas require additional repairs or maintenance are sent to customers for them to see for themselves. After viewing the video, any additional recommendations are clearly itemised and costed for the customer to approve before any additional work is commenced.

As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, John Dale Motors is at the forefront of new vehicle technology and five-star customer satisfaction. The team are as committed to serving the automotive needs of the people of Charmhaven and surrounding areas as was John Dale, the businesses founder all those years ago.
